During his presentations, Doctor. Gawande introduced a common struggle that most professionals face, which is how to continuously improve from how much of an expert they already are to the next stage. There are two view about it. According to Doctor. Gawande, the first one is the “traditional pedagogical view” which are after learning fundamental and profession skills in school, professionals should be able to “manage their own improvement” (3:) In the contrast, he indicate that in the view of sports, coaches are the needed piece in order to be success. To support his previous idea, he bring in serval examples to support that having a coach can help an individual or team to improve. One of them appeared in the late 1800s. During a long period of time Yale football team have win most of the game against their biggest rival Harvard with a head coach on the sideline. Another one comes from his own life, he hired one of his former professors to observe on of his operation and give feedback. The result come out surprisingly different. He thought he did great job in that case, but his coach pointed out of a lot small thing that he should improve on. After a year, he found his complication rate drop down even further.
In my own experience, writing has always been the most challenging thing to do. Luckily, I have entered ENG 122 and have Professor. Drown as my class instructor. All of those feedback he gives to my paper are extremely helpful. Somehow, he just can accurately point out where did I do wrong, and how to improve it. And I love that how all of those reading we have done in the past couple week can directly help my writing ability. He does give a lot of homework, but the only way to improve is by continuously practicing.
