Pizzagate is a conspiracy theory that claims that Hilary Clinton and her former campaign manager, John Podesta, ran a child sex ring in the basement of Pizzeria restaurant in DC. It soon went viral along with other nonsense statements. Alex Jones, a famous show commentator who mainly focused on conspiracy theory, describes Clinton as a “Psychopathic demon from hell, who smells like a surfer.” Unlike other conspiracy theories, this one has caused real consequences the society. On December first, 2016, An ordinary father from North Carolina went on a “rescue mission” on Pizzeria restaurant at DC armed with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, A.38 handgun, and a folding knife. Later on, when he was arrested, he told the officer he was looking for kidnapped children. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but what is it? How did it start? Who to blame?
Anna Merlan From The Guardian, describe conspiracy theory as a secret act that is organized by a group of the member who’s intention is to insert terror to the common good society, or to gain power. (power,,, interesting) Jan Willem Van Prooijen from Aeon, indicates that the classification of “Us” vs “Them” played an essential role in appealing of conspiracy theory. It’s an ancient tribal instinct that we picked up many years ago and still remain in us. Back then, it was our tribe vs their tribe due to resources, but now its “us” the people or “them” the government, or “us” the locals, vs “them” the foreigners. This instinct flourishes the most during an uncertain time, and it often been used as an efficient tool for far-right popularism to gain support.
In this case, the “Pizzagate” is originated by a Russian online agency whose intention is to spread false information in the states in order to create conflict within the community. Ordinary people like Welch, who believed shared it to other people, add “human touch” and then spread by an online semi automation tool which could retweet or share a message excessively amount of time in a short period of time. It truly went viral when the members of the Trump campaign decided to share it on social media for most likely their own interests. It’s hard to decide who to blame here since many characters have played a role in it and eventually caused a real-world consequence. However, Watts, a cybersecurity expert have said something I strongly agree with. He mentioned that its obviously it’s a foreign attack but it won’t go that far without the help of others. Others in here, he means the Trump campaign. However, there is no evidence that suggests there is a coalition between Trump and the Kremlin, but both of them have got what they want. Trump did take advantage of this opportunity to eventually become the president of The United States, and the Russian did successfully creat division between communities.
